New Zealand
New Zealand is a single jurisdiction. Coroners operate there under the provisions of the (NZ) Coroners Act 1988. The New Zealand courts website has some information about coroners and their courts, and produces a guide called 'When Someone Dies, A Guide to the Work of Coroners and the Operation of the Coroners' Court.' There is a New Zealand Coroners Council. A legal website called HowToLaw provides a layman's guide to NZ coroner's law and practice.
A useful recent decision of the High Court discussing many of the statutory
provisions is Re Sutherland [1994] 2 NZLR 242. Recent decisions of the
Court of Appeal are accessible on the Brookers
website, and also now on a dedicated
part of the Australian Legal Infomation Institute website. Coroners'
reports and recommendations from 1997 are published in Butterworths
Coroners Reports. Documents relating to old inquests are held by Archives
New Zealand.
