Appendix 5: Schedule of Fees and Allowances
Home Office Circular No 15 of 2004, dated 17 March 2004, attached a new Schedule of Fees and Allowances for jurors and witnesses in connection with inquests, with effect from 1 April 2004. The text of the Schedule is substantially the same as that in Appendix 5: unless otherwise stated, only the figures have changed, and these are set out below. (Text which has changed is set out in bold type.)
1 JURORS AND ORDINARY WITNESSES

(c)(i) £29.75; (ii) £59.50
2 PROFESSIONAL WITNESSES
(a)(i) £83.50; (ii) £117.00; (iii) £174.00; (iv) £234.00
(b)(i) absence of up to 2 hours £89.00; (ii) absence over 2 hours but not exceeding 4 hours £125.00; (iii) absence over 4 hours £250.00
(c)(i) £85.25; (ii) £55.25
4 POST MORTEM FEES
(a) £87.70; (b) £251.15;
(c) Travelling expenses
(i) in respect of travel by private conveyance to or from a post mortem examination, per mile each way
Motor cars : Public Transport Rate (including motor cycles) 25p
Motor cars : Standard Rate (including motor cycles) 45p
nb the public transport rate should be paid unless the coroner is satisfied that no adequate public transport was available on the date and at the time in question, or that it would b eunreasonable to expect the pathologist concerned to carry his equipment etc other than by private transport.
