The Society was formed in 1846, and is a voluntary association of coroners, deputy coroners and assistant deputy coroners. In practice, almost all of those eligible to join do so. It holds an annual conference, and joins with the Home Office in providing training courses to its members.
The Society has produced Practice Notes for Coroners, which are not legally binding, or authoritative in any way, but represent the views of the Society as to what in normal circumstances constitutes good practice for coroners.
On 4 June 2003 the Society issued a Press Statement on the Report of the Fundamental Review of Death Certification and Investigation. On 14 July 2003 it issued a Press Statement on the Third Report of the Shipman Inquiry.
The Honorary Secretary is Victor Round Esq, HM Coroner for Worcester, and the
address for correspondence is The Court House, Bewdley Road, Stourport on Severn,

and inquests is available on its website.
