CORONERS’ LAW RESOURCE

Where do coroners operate?

The coroner system was developed in England and Wales, and these pages are largely concerned with the position there. But as the British established colonies and dependent territories elsewhere in the world, the coroner concept was exported with the common law to other countries. Civil law countries (eg France, Italy etc, but also Scotland) do not have coroners. See further, on this common law/civil law divergence of approach, Jervis, Chap 22.
