Global Health is a priority area for research and education at King’s
Our vision is to improve the health and livelihood of those living in challenging environments and situations by enabling them to be able to rely on effective, resilient and autonomous health systems, with leaders who can manage policy and societal health and healthcare issues.
To influence and make an impact, we understand it is crucial to go beyond academic observation.
There is an urgent need for a new generation of experts and leaders to address the causes of global health problems and provide access to cures by bridging the gap between economics, the social sciences, biomedical sciences, humanities and healthcare professionals.
Our clinical engagement and breadth of expertise act as a catalyst in the service of global society and our approach to Global Health sets King’s apart in three distinct ways:
A multidisciplinary approach to solving complex problems
Global Health questions at King’s are framed by genuine dialogue between colleagues across the arts, social sciences and health sciences and multidisciplinary collaboration is supported across King’s. Our breadth and excellence of expertise allows us to approach Global Health problems from multiple angles, influencing and creating impact on both the social and medical causes of the most pressing conditions and situations.
Academia into action
We commit to translating our research into policy, whether through healthcare professionals, sociologists, philosophers or experts in conflict, policy analysis, governance or humanitarian law. We put academia into action by not only producing evidence that informs policy but by using that evidence to work with regional, national and local partners to support its implementation. Our education programmes build social and clinical skills for a wide range of practitioners.
Co-production with local partners
King’s operates within partnerships that shape and inform our knowledge and understanding of Global Health problems and create foundations for sustainable development. We recognise the importance of creating truly global networks and opportunities for learning that flow in all directions of the geographical compass.
Our long-term co-development health partnerships with individual countries support the strengthening of national healthcare systems by building the capacity of health workers and key institutions to:
- Develop health policy and models of care
- Improve delivery of clinical services
- Provide and strengthen health education and training
- Conduct new, leading and impactful research into these areas
Millions suffer and die each year unnecessarily in both developing and developed countries, while issues like ageing, mental health and the health implications of climate change and unprecedented migration require immediate action. By taking a new approach and thanks to rising GDPs, a younger demographic and ever-evolving technology, there are opportunities to make more progress in the next ten years than in the last fifty.
