Ada is a Beowulf or loosely-coupled Linux cluster comprised of nodes (servers) containing Intel  x86-64  processors.  Some nodes also feature Nvidia GPUs for CUDA applications.

The cluster also features high-performance QDR InfiniBand network, a 1Gb/s Ethernet network (with 10Gb/s uplinks) and a Lustre-based distributed parallel file storage system.

The Ada cluster is designed to be expandable in-line with the requirements of its users.

Connectivity

InfiniBand nodes are connected in islands of up to 24 physical servers by a 40Gb/s Intel True Scale QDR InfiniBand network.  Inter-island bandwidth is limited to 20Gb/s for I/O traffic.

All nodes are connected by a 1Gb/s Ethernet network with Ethernet-only nodes featuring dual 1Gb/s second connections.  Ada is connected to the College network at 10Gb/s.

High performance storage

A Lustre-based distributed parallel file system is available to all the nodes via InfiniBand or Ethernet. The InfiniBand network allows I/O to be maximized with a limited number of processes, while the Ethernet network can be used for high throughput distributed calculations.
