Promoting excellence through race equality

Addressing race equality for our staff and students is viewed as a key priority and an essential component in enabling us to achieve our world-class aspirations and excellence in teaching and research. It forms a priortity within our diversity and inclusion programme and features as one of our institutional Equality Objectives

We have a number of programmes and initiatives in place which you can read about on these pages. These include: our  B-MEntor mentoring scheme, the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Staff Network and Steering Group, Black History Month events programme and the BME Student Success Project.  

Race Equality Charter Mark

To build on our existing race equality programme, we signed up to participate in the trial of the Equality Challenge Unit, Race Equality Charter Mark, (REM) in September 2014. This is a national framework which aims to improve the representation, progression and success of BME staff and students in higher education. As a consequence we undertook an intensive and wide-reaching programme of work to identify priorities and develop a 3-year action plan to address these. 

Out of a total of 30 institutions who began on this journey, only 21 completed it and King's was one of only eight who received the Bronze Award, which recognises the quality of the work undertaken and the robustness of the action plan.

Next steps

The action plan includes a breadth of new developments and improvements that need to be delivered across the university. The Diversity & Inclusion Team are working with colleagues around the institution in central services and faculties to coordinate the activity required. Regular reports on progress will be received by the Diversity & Inclusion Steering Group and we will also be sharing important developments in the Staff News

REM - Key findings:  a brief summary of the key results from our research which included an examination of our staff and student data, focus groups with BME staff and students and race equality surveys with the all staff and students.

REM Action plan: our 3-year action plan covering how we will address the findings from our research and improve race equality at King's.

REM submission:  the full application that includes extensive analysis of all the areas required and which was submitted to the Equality Challenge Unit in order to achieve the Bronze Award.
