Research interests

Mark’s research interests include digital libraries and archives, their role in research and scholarly publishing, and their relationships with broader research environments and research infrastructures. He is interested in understanding research practices in the humanities, including researcher (and other user) behaviour in archives, and investigating how such practices can be supported or enhanced by digital methods, including the use of “citizen science” or “community-sourcing” methods. A particular interest is the application of computational methods for organising, integrating and analysing unstructured and semi-structured information, and the issues of interpretation this raises.

Biography

Mark is the Director of the Centre for e-Research, and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Digital Humanities, teaching on a variety of modules in the MA in Digital Asset and Media Management. His original academic background was in mathematics and philosophy, and he gained a PhD in mathematics at University College London, before starting a 17-year career in the software and systems consultancy industry, working on large-scale development projects for industrial and commercial clients.
After a brief career break – during which he studied Late Antique and Byzantine Studies – he began his career at King’s as Technical Director of the Arts and Humanities Data Service, working as part of the AHDS Executive that was hosted by the College.
