Ethical approval requirements external to the College
Universities are not the only organisations who require ethical approval before research can be conducted. This section gives details about the other types of ethical approval you may need.
In the UK the Department of Health requires that ethical approval is obtained from Research Ethics Committees within the UK Health Departments Research Ethics Service (including the National Research Ethics Service (in England) and the equivalent Research Ethics Services in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland)), for certain types of research studies that fall under the remit of this system. This is based on the requirements for ethical review under both the policy of the UK Health Departments and legilsation applying to the UK as a whole or particular countires of the UK. Other countries also have their own ethics approval procedures which must be followed if you are conducting research abroad.
Do I still need College approval if I have other ethics approval?
If your project has been approved by a Research Ethics Committee from within the UK Health Departments Research Ethics Service, such as a NHS REC, you do not need additional College approval. For all other research you will need to get College approval as well as the other ethical approvals required.
