About us

About us

The Research Grants & Contracts office (RG&C) sits within the Research Management Directorate of the College and deals with all administrative, financial and legal aspects of externally-funded research in the College.

RG&C also negotiates agreements which underpin or facilitate academic research taking place.

Paul Labbett is the Director of Research Grants & Contracts and there are four sections:

Pre-Award Section

The Pre-Award team deal with matters relating to the application and award of research funding (except that handled by the specialist EU Research Funding Office).

The Pre Award Section:

  • Provide certain (staff-related) costs for inclusion in research proposals
  • Determine the price for commercially-funded research work
  • Formally check and sign-off proposals before they're sent to a funder
  • Formally accept grants awarded
  • Draft and negotiate legal terms for funding
  • Negotiate collaboration and consortium agreements
  • Sign research contracts on behalf of the College

If you are external to the College and wish to discuss a potential agreement, please contact Ellie Bertram, Head of Pre-Award, and she will put you in touch with the right person in her team.

If you are a member of staff applying for external research funding, please see our internal web pages which have information on College application processes (including how to request costs and how to obtain approval to submit an application) and contact details for team members.

Post-Award Section

The Post-Award team deal with issues involved in the administration of research funds (except that handled by the specialist EU Research Funding Office) once they have been formally accepted by the College.

The Post-Award Section is responsible for:

  • Invoicing
  • Monitoring and accounting for profile payments made
  • Monitoring expenditure
  • Paying partners and subcontractors involved in projects
  • Financial reporting
  • Authorising staff appointments on research projects

If you are external to the College and wish to discuss the above, please contact Andrew Webb, Head of Post-Award, and he will put you in touch with the right person in his team.

If you are a member of staff wishing to discussion any of the above for an active grant/contract, please see our internal web pages for contact details for team members.

EU Research Funding Office

The EU Research Funding Office are a specialist unit providing the same support as both the Pre-Award team and the Post-Award team but for European Commission funding.

Pre-award support:

  • Provide certain (staff-related) costs for inclusion in research proposals
  • Approve all funding applications before they're sent to the EC
  • Formally accept grants awarded
  • Draft and negotiate legal terms for funding
  • Negotiate collaboration and consortium agreements
  • Sign research contracts on behalf of the College

Post-Award responsibilities:

  • Invoicing
  • Monitoring expenditure
  • Paying partners and subcontractors involved in projects
  • Financial reporting
  • Authorising staff appointments on research projects

If you are external to the College and wish to discuss any of the above, please contact Daniel Walker, Head of EU Research Funding, and he will put you in touch with the right person in his team.

If you are a member of staff considering being involved in an EU application, including negotiations, please see the internal web pages which have information on obtaining costs, formal College procedures and contact details for the team.

Enabling Agreements Section

The Enabling Agreements Section provides specialist support to negotiate agreements which enable research at the College but which do not provide financial support in the way that, for example, a standard research grant or contract does.

Typical agreements handled by Enabling Agreements:

  • Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs)
  • Confidentiality Agreements (CDAs or NDAs)
  • Teaming Agreements

If you are external to the College and wish to discuss any of the above type of agreement (or similar), please contact Paul Labbett, Director of Research Grants and Contracts.

If you are a member of staff, please see the internal web pages for information on College procedures on putting in place these types of agreements and for contact details.
