Horizon 2020 to replace EU's 7th Framework Programme
Horizon 2020 is the EU’s new programme for research and innovation which takes over from the 7th Framework Programme (FP7). It runs from 2014 to 2020 and has an €80 billion budget. This includes a dedicated science budget of € 24 598 million to provide a boost to top-level research in Europe, including an increase in funding of 77% for the European Research Council (ERC). It will also provide € 31 748 million to help address climate change, sustainable transport and mobility, affordable renewable energy, food safety and security and coping with the challenge of an ageing population.
Horizon 2020 will:
-
support the most talented and creative individuals and their teams to carry out frontier research of the highest quality by building on the success of the ERC
-
fund collaborative research to open up new and promising fields of research and innovation through support for Future and Emerging Technologies (FET);
-
provide researchers with excellent training and career development opportunities through the Marie Curie Actions;
-
ensure Europe has world-class research infrastructures (including e-infrastructures) accessible to all researchers in Europe and beyond.
By mid 2012, the final calls under FP7 will bridge the gap towards Horizon 2020's first launch of calls in 2014.
