Prison Integrated Drug Treatment Service Evaluation (IDTS)
Sponsored by the Department of Health, John Marsden, Garry Stillwell and colleagues from the Universities of Bristol and Manchester, are coordinating a major national evaluation of the prison IDTSprogramme. There has been a major expansion of opioid substitution treatment in English prisons coordinated by prison healthcare staff. The goal of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of methadone maintenance in terms ofseveral post-release outcomes, including treatment engagement and re-offending. Some 20,000 prisoners are taking part in the evaluation. Recruitment for the study is ongoing.
