Substance misuse research within the Addictions Department is lead by Professor John Strang and Dr John Marsden. They head a multidisciplinary team made up of academic researchers and clinical practitioners with backgrounds in social science, psychology and psychiatry.

Building upon a history of successful grant applications, we have secured funding for ongoing research in the UK from the National Institute for Health Research, the English Department of Health and the Medical Research Council." Through our own high quality individual endeavours, and by working collaboratively with research leaders from other institutions, we continue to develop the UK’s evidence base on drug prevention and treatment, adding to our historical contributions towards drugs policy and current involvement in the development of clinical guidelines.

Two ongoing projects (RedNet, Psychonaut) were initiated by Dr Paolo Deluca, based in the former Section of Alcohol Research, further demonstrating the multidisciplinary nature of our work in the Addictions Department.
