Biostatistics research

Academic statisticians in the Department carry out methodological research and much collaborative work with departments in the Institute and in other Universities in Britain and abroad. Current work is funded by MRC, ESRC, BBSRC, NIHR, HTA and US NIMH. In addition to trials listed elsewhere ongoing and recent examples include:-

Studies of autism and Specific Language Impairment (SNAP, BASIS, AGP, University of Michigan, SLIC).

  • mixture model mapping of brain activation in fMRI treatment of depression by CBT
  • violent incidents in secure units
  • Gulf War Syndrome
  • spatial interaction between brain cells in AIDS associated dementia
  • clustering of suicide among the mentally ill.
  • Generalized Linear Latent and Mixed Models (www.gllamm.org)
  • Life-course methods and analysis
  • Inference using cross-measure calibration
  • Wirral Child Health & Development Study

We are an internationally leading specialist group in methodology for mental health research. We have particular expertise in measurement, developmental and longitudinal analysis

We have extensive collaborations within the Institute and other universities in the UK and US.

Together with statisticians from Bristol, Cambridge and Manchester we form the Mental Health Research Network Methodology Research Group. The gllamm program was developed here and through this and through international training we provide support for advanced structural equation modelling.

Applied collaborations include a longstanding NIMH funded programme of research into autism with Catherine Lord (University of Michigan) and more recent MRC work on the early neuropsychological development with the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development (Birkbeck). Other early years collaborations include the MRC Wirral Child Health & Development Study (Manchester, Liverpool) which focuses on the development of emotion regulation.
