Our research centres
The Institute of Psychiatry is home to five prestigious research centres which promote cutting edge collaborative research within an interdisciplinary context. Each centre has secured a position at the forefront of international scientific research and makes major contributions to teaching, training and research by inspiring and nurturing the next generation of scientific leaders.

The MRC Centre for Neurodegeneration Research brings together scientists and clinicians to investigate the causative mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease and motor neurone disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and to identify new therapeutic targets, better treatments and develop laboratory-based diagnostic methods.

The Medical Research Council (MRC) Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry (SGDP) Centre looks at the impact and interplay between genes, the environment and developmental factors influencing common psychiatric disorders that emerge in childhood, including anxiety, depression, the autistic spectrum and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The centre’s major strength is the synergy generated by bringing together diverse social, genetic and developmental perspectives, encouraging and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration.
In November 2011, work began on the
