International Reputation

King's College London is one of the top 30 universities in the world (2011/12 QS World University Rankings) and ranks among Europe’s foremost research universities. As a member of the Russell Group (a coalition of the UK’s major research-based universities), King’s is in the top group of universities for research earnings and is the only university to host six Medical Research Council centres. It is now the largest centre for the education of healthcare professionals in Europe.

  • The Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, is one of the world’s leading postgraduate teaching and research centres in mental health related sciences.
  • In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the Institute was judged to have the highest research power of any UK institution in the areas of neuroscience, clinical psychology and psychiatry.
  • The Institute has links to most of the major research centres around the world, with many staff joining us from overseas. The Institute is a WHO collaborating centre.
  • For psychiatry and psychology, the Institute is the second most cited research centre in the world - and the single largest outside the US.
  • The Institute shares the same site as the world-famous Maudsley Hospital, which is part of the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM) - one of the largest mental health providers in Europe.
  • The Institute and SLaM work together to host the only specalist Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health in the UK working towards better treatment, earlier diagnosis and individualised healthcare by pursuing excellence in research, development and teaching.

The Institute is part of King's Health Partners, a pioneering collaboration between King's College London, Guy's and St Thomas', King's College Hospital and SLaM.

Academic Excellence

The Institute of Psychiatry's impact is strong across psychology; neuroscience; addictions; child and adolescent psychiatry; clinical neuroscience; forensic and neurodevelopmental sciences; health service and population research; old age psychiatry; psychological medicine; psychosis studies; and social, genetic and developmental psychiatry.

  • Members of our staff consistently rank among the most influential researchers, nationally and internationally, in the field of psychiatry and related disciplines.
  • Students are able to network with international leaders in their field and have the opportunity to attend a wide range of symposia, workshops and conferences as part of their studies.
  • Students enjoy unrivalled learning opportunities, supported by strong partnerships with NHS Trusts, industry and healthcare organisations. Our partnerships with the NHS means that students benefit from a range of clinical placements as part of their MSc/PG Dip programme and our research students have access to a large clinical population.
  • Specialised postgraduate programmes are taught in relatively small student groups. Close contact occurs between staff and students throughout the programmes which enables students to become part of the dialogue of their chosen discipline.
  • Teaching by staff with research and clinical expertise allows students to gain specialist knowledge in topics related to psychiatry, psychology, and basic and clinical neuroscience and thus to develop their careers as clinicians, therapists, researchers and educators.
  • The Executive Management Board and School Education Committee have recently approved the IoP’s Education Strategy for 2011-16. The overall aim is to enhance our education provision, to ensure that it attracts the very best students nationally and internationally, draws upon our research excellence, and is at the cutting edge in content and delivery, enabling graduates to achieve their potential and to contribute to society.
