Welcome to the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), a School of King’s, where our mission is to increase the understanding of how the mind and the brain work and to use this understanding to help the prevention and effective treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders.
The IoPPN (previously the Institute of Psychaitry), founded in 1948, has a sixty-year tradition in educating and cultivating some of the finest scientific minds in the field. It continues to be the premier European institution devoted to the study and practice of psychiatry and related disciplines and is world renowned for the quality of its research. This research excellence, along with our strong partnerships with NHS Trusts, industry and healthcare organisations, means that our students enjoy unrivalled learning opportunities.
We are part of King’s, a vibrant university in the heart of London. King’s is the only University in the country to host three Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) funded by the National Institute for Health Research, and a number of Medical Research Council (MRC) Research Centres. Here at the Institute we are host to the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre. In partnership with South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM) we host the only specialist BRC for Mental Health in the UK.
Our reach is both local and global. The IoP is part of the Academic Health Sciences Centre King’s Health Partners (KHP), a pioneering collaboration between King’s and three NHS Trusts: SLaM, Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital. KHP’s aim is to seek and bring about more effective improvements in health and well-being for patients in London and beyond by combining the best of basic and translational research, clinical excellence and world-class teaching.
Impacting worldwide, we are at the forefront of global mental health research and I highlight here two primary examples: the Centre for Global Mental Health, a collaborative initiative with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine which aims to foster research and training in policy, prevention, treatment and care, and Maudsley International which utilises the knowledge and skills of staff from both IoPPN and SLaM to help partners based around the globe meet the needs of people with mental ill health and to promote mental health.
As you can see this is an exciting time at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. Our past successes and rich tradition lay an excellent foundation and enable us to move forward and embrace opportunity. We invite you to join us.
