A welcome from the interim Executive Dean, Professor Patrick Leman
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). The IoPPN is a world leader and the premier European institution in the research, study and practice of psychiatry and related disciplines. Our community of scholars and students shares a mission to understand how the mind and the brain work and to use this understanding to improve mental health and wellbeing and to address psychiatric and neurological disorders.
The IoPPN was founded in 1948 and can date its origins to 1896. We have an enduring tradition of training and cultivating the finest scientific minds in the field. Our strong partnerships with NHS foundation trusts, industry, policy-makers and healthcare organisations, and the global reach of our collaborative relationships, means that our students enjoy unrivalled learning, placement and employment opportunities.
The Institute is a faculty of King’s College London, the fourth oldest university in England and one of the top 25 universities in the world. Centrally located at the heart of one of the world’s great cities, we host two Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) funded by the National Institute for Health Research and a number of Medical Research Council (MRC) research centres. In partnership with South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust we host the only specialist BRC for mental health in the UK.
Our impact is both local and global. The IoPPN is part of the Academic Health Sciences Centre King’s Health Partners, a pioneering collaboration between King’s and three NHS foundation trusts: SLaM, Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital. We are at the forefront of global mental health research and through our partnerships foster research and training in policy, prevention, treatment and care around the world.
The IoPPN’s rich tradition and exceptional reputation add to the friendly, dynamic, and internationally diverse environment that drives excellence in all we do. I invite you to visit our webpages to see for yourself examples of the ground-breaking research and innovative education that makes the Institute a unique and exciting place to work and study.
