Community Mental Health

The Section of Community Mental Health (SCMH) conducts research designed to drive improvement in community-based mental health services.

We work with service users, healthcare professionals, and policy makers to evaluate and test the effectiveness of existing mental health programmes, develop assessment measures and inform treatments and interventions.

We have a multi-disciplinary approach, with our teams combining clinical and academic expertise on various projects including:

  • tracking and formulating evidence-based analysis of changes in public attitudes towards mental health problems to inform government mental health strategy;
  • developing assessment tools and resources which promote understanding of mental illness among health and social care professionals and guide care and support planning;
  • evaluation of the impact of welfare benefit reforms on mental health and health service use;
  • studies into the effects of stigma on access to mental health care, health care and employment.

Our specialist research teams are led by senior professionals in the field, and our staff includes:

Professor Graham Thornicroft, Professor of Community Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), former Head of Department (HSPR), founder of SCMH in 1992, and also a Consultant Psychiatrist and the author of a number of world-renowned books and papers on mental health.

Professor George Szmukler, a psychiatrist and former Dean of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), and Director of the Bethlem and Maudsley NHS Trust, now Associate Director of the NIHR Mental Health Network and an active researcher.

Dr Sara Evans-Lacko, Senior Lecturer in mental health services research and global mental health.

Dr Claire Henderson, research lead on the evaluation of the Time to Change programme to reduce stigma and discrimination since 2011, a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) and Head of both the Section of Community Mental Health and the Centre for Innovation and Evaluation in Mental Health.
