World's Largest Mental Health Lesson

Poet and Astronaut-in-training Hussain Manawer and King’s College London’s Professor Dame Til Wykes are inviting hundreds of school children from across the country to help set a new Guinness World Records title with the World's Largest Mental Health Lesson.

Held in the famous Hackney Empire Tuesday 21 March 12pm-4pm the lesson aims to host an audience of 600 young people along with local community groups, sixth forms and colleges, celebrities, mental health campaigners, VIPs and the media.

The lesson will cover issues such as depression and other common mental health conditions, the effects of stigma, how to maintain good mental health and sources of support.

In addition to the record-breaking learning experience delivered by Professor Wykes, the day will include music, poetry by Hussain Manawer and more. including a number of special celebrity and VIP guest appearances.

This free event promises to be an engaging and enjoyable learning experience.

The event will also be used to inform a priority-setting study. A survey will be distributed to all attendees as well as students of schools not in attendance.

Study background:
  • 10% of young people in the UK (5-16) live with a diagnosable mental health problem, with many mental health problems in adulthood emerging during childhood.
  • Youth mental health represents and global public-health challenge, highlighting the importance of research to improve treatments and services for young people living with mental health problems, and ameliorating this significant burden upon themselves, family and friends, and society.
  • The NIHR Maudsley BRC champions the views and lived experience of mental health service users and the public in shaping future research, including in identifying future research priorities.
Aim:
  • To understand what young people in the UK believe to be the priorities in young people’s mental health research.
  • Gaining this understanding will provide clarity as to the issues deemed most important by young people with regards to mental health research, and thus will facilitate a targeted research focus in the future.
Method:
  • Students who attend the World’s Largest Mental Health Lesson on 21.03.17 will be invited to complete an online survey, where they will be able to share what issues they believe are the most important for researchers in youth mental health to consider, and their reasons for this.
  • Students of schools who were unable to attend will also be invited to participate in the survey, enabling a greater number of views to be heard.
