Tropical Ecology

Tropical interests originated with my studies of the Psocoptera on Jamaica. Later in 1990, at the invitation of the late Prof. Ian Thornton, I joined two of his expeditions to look at the recolonisation of the Krakatau islands, in particular the periodically active volcanic island of Anak Krakatau (above- Antlion colonisation see Turner 1992). This developed into a longer term study with an Oxford team led by Rob Whittaker which focussed on the more vegetated islands in the archipelago. This research study ended in 1995.
Anak Krakatau has been very active since 1992 and the sites shown above have now been buried under layers of ash (below)
