Staying power

Once you have been accepted on to a nursing course, you will need to have staying power in order to complete it.

Staying power means that you are able to keep going in the face of adversity, so that when things get tough, you don't quit.

Before starting a course in nursing you might like to ask yourself the following questions.

What can make it tough going?

What internal resources do I need?

Why assess my strengths and challenges?

Not having the necessary resources. These can be external or internal.

External resources include;

• sufficient financial funds

• manageable home commitments

• an appropriate place to study

• access to computer facilities

Finding funds is a necessary part of committing to any course.

You need to be sure that you can afford to support yourself, and even a family, throughout what is normally at least a three year period of full-time study.

A student needs inner resources to complete a course of study. These include skills as well as personal qualities.

Discover more about:

A strength is not only a skill you possess that enables you to to carry out a task, it can also be an attitude of mind or a quality that carries you through adversity.

A challenge is not only a area of weakness in yourself, it can also be an approach to work or an area of frustration that you need to overcome.

Knowing your strengths and challenges is valuable because self-evaluation is the first step to effective learning.

It also helps you to plan how long you may have to spend on a project so you can work out your own learning programme.
