Travelling in London

Underground sign Travelling by the London Underground (the "tube") is one of the easiest and fastest ways of getting around London. Trains run from 5.30am to 12.30am.
One-day Travel Cards allow unlimited travel on both the tube and bus and this is the most economic way of using public transport.

By Bus

London bus
London’s famous red buses operate an extensive service. There is a flat fare of £1.20 for any journey within central London or a One-day Travel Card ("bus pass") can also be bought for £3.00.
There is an extensive night bus service (pdf, 105K) that runs from 12.30am throughout the night;  fares start from £1.50 and Travel Cards can be also used on this service.
 
 
Transport for London provides a very useful service, the Journey Planner,  for planning your journey using public transport, walking and cycling.

By Taxi

London cab
London's black cabs are known all over the world. They can be hailed in the street and the fare is calculated on a meter. The black cabs are licensed and registered with the local authority and they  are the safest way to travel in London, if choosing to travel by taxi. Licensed  minicabs also operate in the London area but take care (pdf, 273K) because there are also unlicensed minicabs which are not recommended.

Riverboats are not only a way of travelling in London but also a great way of fitting in some extra sightseeing! Departing from Westminster Pier there are services downriver to Greenwich, home of the Royal Observatory and the Cutty Sark, or, in the opposite direction, to Kew, Richmond and the Royal Hampton Court.

An excellent tour of London can be taken for minimal cost on the Number 11 bus. A single journey should cost £1.50, or if you wish to hop on and off, a day travel card ("bus pass") can be bought for £3.00. Catch the Number 11 from Liverpool Street Station, and you will be taken on the following route: Bank of England, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Fleet Street, The Royal Courts of Justice, The Strand and the Theatre district, Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, Whitehall, The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, New Scotland Yard, Westminster Cathedral, Victoria Station, Buckingham Palace Road, King’s Road Chelsea, and Fulham Broadway.
