About us

Mission Statement

KCMHR is the leading civilian UK centre of excellence for military health research and independent of the UK Ministry of Defence, our work has help shape government policy towards military personnel with our research published in high impact journals such as the British Medical Journal and The Lancet.

Our research has contributed to changes on government domestic policy towards military personnel. These are:

  • Mental health provision for reservists entitling them the same care after deployment as their regular counterparts
  • Contributed to evidence to change the policy of how anthrax vaccinations are offered
Our objectives relate to the three main areas: 
  • War and health
  • War and psychiatry
  • Personnel issues and social policy

Specific aims

Academic Excellence
  • To continue to be the leading civilian UK centre of excellence for military health research
  • To continue to attract and retain highly skilled staff
Teaching
  • To be at the forefront of our field of study with teaching delivered by internationally renowned academic
  • To deliver a challenging and stimulating research-led MSc programme
  • To foster an environment that supports students through learning and encourage the development of independent critical thinking
  • To keep abreast of the changing environment both nationally and internationally and to reflect this in our teaching
Research
  • To maintain and build upon research collaborations to address challenges in our field of study
  • To build upon our success of acquiring research funding
  • To attract and retain high quality researchers
  • To continue to research and publish high impact journal paper
