M.A. in Classical Art and Archaeology

M.A. in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies

The M.A. in Ancient History, the M.A. in Classics, the M.A. in Classical Art and Archaeology and the M.A. in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies are intercollegiate degree-programmes of the University of London, taught by the Departments of Classics, Greek and Latin, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, and History in King's College London, Royal Holloway University of London, and University College London. They are administered by the Subject Panels in Classics and History through their joint M.A. Steering Group. They are subject to the Regulations of the University of London as published for the M.A. degrees in these fields, and conform to the Codes of Practice for postgraduate students issued by the participating Colleges.

Entry requirements

Candidates must meet the general entry requirements for M.A. programmes as specified in University Regulations and advertised in College Prospectuses.

In addition, candidates for the M.A. in Ancient History and M.A. in Classics are expected to be able to use authors and sources in one or more ancient languages.

(Candidates who need to improve their knowledge of an ancient language, or to learn another one, may take one language-learning course as part of the M.A.)

Curriculum: general

The current list of courses approved for the M.A. in Ancient History, the M.A. in Classics and the M.A. in Classical Art and Archaeology is printed below in this booklet, with details of the syllabus and method of assessment of each course. This list includes approved courses from the programmes of the M.A. in Archaeology (UCL) and M.A. in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies.

The list distinguishes between courses which are taught exclusively at M.A. level and those which make use of B.A. teaching (all of which have a minimum 50% separate M.A. component).

Candidates must take three taught courses, and write a dissertation, subject to the specific rules for each degree. All four components carry equal marks.

No candidate may take more than one language-learning course, or more than one specially approved course from another M.A. programme (as distinct from those included in the general list), or more than two taught courses which make use of B.A. teaching.

Candidates may not offer for examination any course which is the same as or substantially similar to any course or set work which they have undertaken as part of a previous degree in this or another University.

Candidates' choice of courses and dissertation topic are subject to the approval of the College at which they are registered, and of the M.A. Boards of Examiners.

M.A. in Ancient History

Candidates must take the following taught courses:

1. M500 Sources and Methods in Ancient History (the 'core/training' course of the M.A. in Ancient History, taken for assessment only by candidates for this degree).

2. A course chosen from the current list of courses approved for the M.A. in Ancient History.

3. Another course of any type from the current list of courses approved for the M.A. in Ancient History or the M.A. in Classics (which may be a language-learning course in an ancient language) or the M.A. in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies, or, with the approval of their School and the Steering Group, an appropriate course from any other M.A. programme within the University of London.

The dissertation must be in the field of Ancient History.

M.A. in Classics

Candidates must normally take three taught courses including:

[i] at least one course chosen from the current list of dedicated courses approved for the M.A. in Classics (marked * in the list), and

[ii] at least one course which tests knowledge of Greek or Latin in the original language or, if more suited to their level of linguistic attainment, one (but not more than one) language-acquisition course (language-testing- and acquisition-courses are marked + in the list).

Note: requirements [i] and [ii] may be satisfied by a single course.

Candidates must also attend the training course, M950 Undertaking Research in Classics.

Candidates may include, subject to the approval of their College and the Steering Group, an appropriate course from any other M.A. programme within the University of London.

The dissertation must normally be in the field of classical language, literature or thought, or the classical tradition.

M.A. in Classical Art and Archaeology

Candidates must normally take the following three taught courses:

1-2. Two courses on a classical archaeological or art-historical subject chosen from the current list of courses approved for the M.A. in Classical Art and Archaeology, the M.A. in Classics and the M.A. in Ancient History. At least one of these must be a dedicated M.A. course (marked* in the list).

3. Another course of any type from the approved list of courses for the M.A. in Classical Art and Archaeology, the M.A. in Classics and the M.A. in Ancient History (which may be a language-learning course in an ancient language), or, with the approval of their College and the Subject Panel in Classics, an appropriate course from any other M.A. programme within the University of London.

They must also attend the training course, M700 Undertaking Research in Classical Archaeology: Materials and Methods, in the autumn term.
