1. Use the CHARM
discography. This is much the fullest online resource for finding who
recorded what, where and when, especially during the 78 era. |
|
2. NB If you want to use an original 78rpm disc from the King's
Sound Archive you need to discover the original catalogue (coupling) number,
for example His Master's Voice DB 3791 or Columbia LX 1924. If you don't
need an original disc, look first of all for a CD reissue (e.g. in a library
catalogue or in the bi-annual RED Classical Catalogue (in the Round Reading
Room)). |
|
3. Do a Google search. |
|
4. Look at the CHARM
discography links to see if there's an online discography of the composer
or performer you're looking for. |
|
5. Search through Gramophone
magazine archive online to see what was reviewed in the past. |
|
6. Try the discographies published by the City of London Phonograph
and Gramophone Society. The only index is of performers, but apart from
that (rather debilitating) shortcoming, they are excellent, and cover much
of HMV and Columbia UK issues. Failing that, try the Gramophone Shop Encyclopedia
(all three editions). |
|
7. Do an ALEPH search on 'discography'. You'll find we have quite
a lot of them. See if any looks hopeful and go and check them out. |
|
8. While you're in the library, take a look at Brian Rust's Guide
to Discography and at Michael H. Gray and Gerald D. Gibson's Bibliography
of Discographies (the latter also available as PDFs through the CHARM
resources page). If you need to search for other discographies, Rust
and Gray will help. |
|
9. Go to the useful list of online sound archive catalogues at
collectionscanada.ca/gramophone/m2-142-e.html#d
and search them. |
|
10. For US issues especially, try OCLC First Search (you need an
ATHENS username and password, available from the library). Go to WorldCat.
In Advanced Search put in your search terms and tick 'Sound recording'.
Search. |
|
11. Go to the British Library, Humanities Reading Room 2. Turn
right. Down at the end are the discographies. Try the Rigler-Deutsch Index,
and anything else that looks hopeful. |
|
12. If you've done *all* of this, and still can't find what you're
looking for, join the mus-perf-rec discussion list and send an enquiring
message. |
