DOING MORE WITH LESS. STATE AID REFORM IN TIMES OF AUSTERITY: SUPPORTING GROWTH AMID FISCAL CONSTRAINTS.
With Joaquín Almunia, Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Competition, and Vincent Cable, UK Secretary of State.
Vice-President Almunia will share his views on the place of State aid policy among the pillars of the European project and its heightened significance for our economy and society in these troubled times. More than ever, the European Commission’s control of government subsidies across the entire EU can help Europe’s governments make the most of increasingly scarce public resources. The overhaul of State aid policy that was launched in May 2012 is designed to help them improve the quality of public spending in pursuit of objectives of public interest and to support projects for growth and job creation that the market would overlook if left to its own devices.
