EthiCAL: Medical Ethics Multimedia Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) Project

From 1997 to 2000, Dr David Lloyd headed the EthiCAL project, a pilot exercise to explore the possibility of developing computer assisted learning materials for teaching medical ethics. Different aspects of the work were carried out at the Centre and in the Department of General Practice and Primary Care at the Weston Education Centre.

The principal objectives of EthiCAL were:

  • to provide an innovative and effective response to the increasing demand for medical ethics education
  • to produce an interactive medical ethics Computer Assisted Learning resource with the potential to be easily adapted and amended for different teaching purposes
  • to develop a user-centred CAL design strategy which could be successfully applied in the development of materials for other disciplines

The EthiCAL program interface presents users with an interactive environment in which to develop their ability to identify and make judgements about problems arising in the ethical dimension of health care practice.
