Rachel Joyce

Profile

Rachel Joyce is a first year Mphil/PhD student in the Law Department. Rachel graduated with distinction from King's College, London, in January 2010 with an MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice. She received the ICPR Prize for Best Dissertation 2008/2009 for her paper "The Causational Factors of Detainee Abuse at Abu Ghraib Prison." She also holds a Bachelor's degree in Civil Law from the National University of Ireland, Galway. Her interests include human rights, international law, and the relationship between state, media and citizens.

Research

Rachel’s research is a study of the state discourse in Sri Lanka at the end of the civil war, concerned with methods of state communication and analysis of popular understandings of the conflict.

Her supervisor is Professor Penny Green.

Teaching & Employment Interests

Rachel is interested in teaching International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Criminology and Criminal Justice. She is also interested in further researching Refugee Law.
