An overview of the College service
At the centre of the service is the commercial Blackboard Vista software. The system is managed by ISS, with the hosting outsourced to Blackboard.
The service includes training and pedagogical support for staff, provided jointly by KLI (King's Learning Institute) and ISS; and development, technical and first line helpdesk support, provided by ISS. Additionally, integration with other systems such as the TurnitinUK plagiarism detection service and Wimba Voice Tools is now supported as well as Wimba Create software to help staff with the authoring of learning materials in Microsoft Word to web page format.

e-Learning elsewhere in the College
As well as the College central service there are e-learning stores/systems managed by different Schools. For example
- The inhouse development of the
Medicine, Dental Institute and Biomedical and Health Sciences Virtual Campus. (Also used by Nursing and Midwifery) - The extensive use of webpages by Departments such as
Mathematics, Physics and MSc Neuroscience .
A review of e-learning at King’s College
During 2008, a series of cluster discussions and individual interviews took place within the College to map the nature and extent of the use of e-learning, to identify good pedagogical practice across the College and to explore key issues, challenges and possible directions. A final report was published in 2009 and can be viewed from the link at the foot of this page, 'A review of e-learning at King’s College'.
'At risk' periods
In order to minimize disruption, scheduled maintenance on e-learning is done on Fridays, 3am-5am Amsterdam time (GMT +1hr).
In addition, e-learning may very occasionally be affected by work on other ISS systems undertaken during the ISS 'at risk' period, which is on Wednesdays 17:30-19:30.
Any specific activities are notifed to all users using Campus Announcements within the main e-learning service.
