Presented to the Centre by the family in 1966. The papers relate to the later part of Barnardiston's career. Material relating to the capture of Tsingtao, North China, reflects the relationship between Japan and Britain at this time; there are messages of support from the Japanese public, and official invitations to various celebrations whilst on a subsequent tour of Japan. The majority of the collection consists of papers collected whilst Barnardiston was Chief of the Military Mission to Portugal; his personal appointment diaries contain several closely observed descriptions of Portuguese politics and people, and the country's contribution to the war effort. Also included is some correspondence relating to conversations held between Barnardiston and General Ducarne in 1906 regarding Belgian neutrality in the event of war. The papers are arranged chronologically in sections; the diaries, originally given separate numbers in a brief appraisal conducted when the papers were deposited, have been collected under the period of Barnardiston's post in Portugal, to which they mainly refer.
