SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection mainly comprises articles written by Clarke throughout his career and early retirement, on numerous subjects, including the history and development of the Royal West African Frontier Force, and unsigned personal recollections of his service during World War Two. There is also a draft copy of Clarke's unpublished memoirs which give details of his career from 1912 to his retirement in 1947, notably descriptions of his service in Gallipoli and Palestine during World War One, with the Essex Regt in Ireland, 1920-1922, and his various posts in West Africa previous to, and during, World War Two. Several papers and pamphlets collated by Clarke, mainly relating to the training and performance of the Royal West African Frontier Force, 1923-[1960], and printer's transparencies of maps used in the History of the Royal West African Frontier Force (Gale and Polden, Aldershot, 1964), are also included in the collection.
