Athena SWAN success for the Institute

Posted on 06/10/2016

Silver PuffThe Institute is delighted to announce that it has been granted a Athena SWAN Silver award by the Equality Challenge Unit, along with two other Divisions in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine*.

The award, announced today, recognises our continued commitment in supporting gender equality and championing an inclusive working environment for all.

To achieve Athena SWAN awards, applicants sign up to the Athena SWAN Charter and undertake thorough self-assessment of their practices, policies and culture, as well as develop measurable action plans to further good practice and address areas for improvement within four years.

Dr Katherine Bristowe, from the Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation said: ‘We are delighted to have won a Silver Athena Swan award. At the Cicely Saunders Institute we have embraced the principles of Athena Swan since our inception in 1997. The guiding principles of Dame Cicely Saunders, this pioneering woman who put the person before their disease, are embedded within our culture and permeate all that we do.  Over the past five years we worked hard to implement and measure the effects of initiatives to promote gender equality, inclusion and advancement of women in science. We are committed to supporting every individual to realise their own goals and potential, balanced with personal needs and responsibilities. We are incredibly proud to hold a Silver Athena Swan award, and it is a real testament to the hard work of our SAT (self assessment team), the senior team and all colleagues, who have enabled the principles of Athena Swan to become imbedded in the department.’

Congratulations to the Institute's staff and students for their commitment and hard work!
