We are delighted to announce that the King’s Centre for Global Health and Health Partnerships is becoming part of the Division of Health and Social Care Research (HSCR) in 2017.

The Centre, led by Mr Andy Leather, brings expertise in a number of common areas of interest for the Division, including applied research (e.g. sexual health), health system evaluation and population health. In addition, there is a growing focus on global surgery which started with the co-leadership of the recent Lancet Commission on Global Surgery.

The Centre has recently changed its name reflecting the growing importance of the three health partnerships in Sierra Leone, Somaliland and the Democratic Republic of Congo. All aim to support the development of autonomous and resilient health systems in these challenging environments while providing real benefit for those King’s students and staff (clinical and academic) who engage in a spirit of co-development partnership working.

Dr Paula Baraitser is the educational lead of a number of the Centre's educational programmes, including the iBSc and MSc in Global Health. In addition, the Centre provides leadership of the undergraduate medical electives programme.

“Our vision to bring the development and academic communities together within our co-development health partnerships is both challenging and exciting,” said Mr Leather. “The centre provides the connection between our in-country clinical academics and management teams and the wider KCL and KHP community of academics and professional services staff. We look forward to developing joint research proposals with our new divisional academic colleagues and to promoting connections between our Masters programmes. We are already benefitting from professional services support from the division.”

“Bringing together HSCR’s and Global Health’s perspectives creates many new and exciting opportunities for us to address the global health challenges we face,” said Professor Charles Wolfe, Head of the Division.

There will be opportunities to develop the global work undertaken by the Division and further develop the Global Health agenda within the university and across King’s Health Partners.
