Launched in 1998, the Virtual Campus provides online resources and support for over 6000 undergraduate and graduate students across three health schools.
The Virtual Campus is a bespoke on-line environment enabling students to access resources and tools to support their teaching and learning ensuring that any student within the Schools of Medicine, Biomedical Sciences and the Dental Institute will have access to the same electronic curriculum resources as students that are on-site regardless of location.
We provide student facilities such as on-line timetables, lecture resources, course information, examination results, module selection and submission systems, Hospital and General Practice selection systems, clinical pairing and clinical teaching session sign-ups, revision video, podcasts, elective abstracts, course feedback systems as well as a large number of bespoke on-line administrative systems and online curriculum tools for both staff and students to facilitate their programmes of study.
We have developed interactive tutorials, e-learning resources, a subject-specific frequently asked question bank, a reusable learning resource data bank, as well as having the facility for students to access on-line revision material that is constantly being developed for a wide range of courses and modules. In addition, we are responsible for the design and development of Technology Enhanced Learning solutions to support the curriculum including novel ePortfolio solutions, virtual patients, interactive tutorials.
We also design and provide technical support and advice for both undergraduate and graduate programmes in Biomedical Sciences and Medicine and provide advice and training on technology enhanced learning solutions as well as bespoke developments maximizing best teaching and learning practice balancing the best of online delivery, usability, web standards and pedagogical principles.
The Virtual Campus and Technology Enhanced Learning Unit is part of the Division of Medical Education but staff in the unit work across three of the health schools.
The Unit collaborates closely with equivalent units in the College, other HE Institutions and National and International bodies on the use, dissemination and best practice in the use of virtual and managed learning environments and the inter-transferability of systems and Technology Enhanced Learning best practice in both Medical and Science education.
