Professor Michael Malim FRS, one of the School's inspirational and dedicated research degree supervisors.
Michael Malim FRS is Professor and Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases. He was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Society for his important contributions to our understanding of the molecular biology of HIV. In 2010 students voted him PhD Supervisor of the Year, in recognition of his excellent support and supervision. ‘There’s nothing quite like watching PhD students blossom with only mild intervention,’ says Professor Malim.
The School of Medicine is dedicated to ensuring the success of graduate students: our PhD completion rate is 97% – the highest in the UK.Our students experience a variety of innovative teaching styles that train you how to think, not what to think. We provide an enriching and stimulating learning environment, in which students work alongside world-class academics and talented students from all walks of life.
At undergraduate level and also on taught postgraduate programmes, every student is allocated a personal tutor, who you should meet within the first few weeks of joining us. Postgraduate research students will have a research supervisor. These members of staff are available to give you personal advice and guidance on a range of matters that could be academic, financial, health-related or more.
We offer opportunities for students to enhance your degree by taking advantage of organised exchange programmes, enrolling on a language course and taking part in our innovative inter-professional education programme, shared by students from the School of Medicine with those in the Schools of Nursing & Midwifery and Dentistry. Our Researcher Development Programme, for postgraduate research students, offers transferable and generic skills training, but also subject-specific training.
