Professor Pearson graduated from the University of Cambridge (BA in Natural Sciences, Part II Biochemistry) and obtained his PhD in cellular pathology from Cambridge. He led research teams at the Babraham Institute (1970-1983), and at the MRC Clinical Research Centre in Harrow (1983-1991). In 1991 he was appointed Professor of Vascular Biology (the first in the UK) at King's College London, and directed the Centre for Cardiovascular Biology before its amalgamation into the new Cardiovascular Division. In 2002 he became Associate Medical Director (Research) at the British Heart Foundation, initially seconded part-time, but since 2010 employed full time, though the BHF allow him to spend 20% of his time at KCL.
He has served on executive committees of several UK professional societies (British Atherosclerosis Society, British Cardiovascular Society, British Microcirculation Society, British Society for Cardiovascular Research, British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis) and journal editorial boards (currently ATVB, Cardiovascular Research, Journal of Vascular Research, and Vascular Pharmacology), and was the founding secretary of the European Vascular Biology Organisation. He was vice chairman of the HEFC RAE 2008 subpanel A1 (Cardiovascular), and is a member of the REF 2014 subpanel A1 (Clinical Medicine). He was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2004 and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2006.
Professor Pearson’s major interest and expertise is in intracellular signalling pathways and phenotypic responses in endothelial cells, mainly in the context of pro-inflammatory, angiogenic or pro-fibrotic stimuli. He no longer leads a research group, but maintains collaborations with other members of the Division.
