Department of Medical & Molecular Genetics

About us

The Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics remains at the leading edge of international research in human genetics. The research strategy of the past five years has been driven by the enormous advances brought about by the Human Genome Project, and the Department now encompasses the new technologies of cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry known as functional genomics, and also the expertise in mathematics and genetic epidemiology required for studying the inherited susceptibility often present in common adult onset diseases.

The Department was awarded £6.4 million from the Wellcome Trust, and £2.3 million from the Guy's and St Thomas' Charity, for the complete refurbishment of its laboratories. This has resulted in a state-of-the-art environment which will keep the Department internationally competitive at this very exciting juncture in genetics.

The Department comprises of a number of academic research groups based in the Tower Wing. There is a clinical/scientific interface with the adjacent NHS Genetics Centre in Borough Wing, and with researchers and clinicians from other specialties within Guy's, King's College and St Thomas' Hospitals.
