Research Interests
His research interests have predominantly been in the epidemiology and health services research aspects of stroke, although he has maintained an interest in women’s health having undertaken studies in gynaecological cancer, maternity care and maternal morbidity.
Full details of the stroke research group can be found at the stroke team website. He established a community based South London Stroke Register (SLSR) in 1988 that has been maintained ever since for various programmes of work. The focus of the epidemiology has been on estimating acute and longer term needs of stroke, the risk of stroke in a multi ethnic community and developing chronic disease register methodology.
The SLSR has been used as a sampling frame for trials of early supported discharge after stroke, secondary prevention, carer support and qualitative studies. Charles has coordinated four successive EU funded programmes assessing the quality of stroke care in Europe.
Charles has been involved in clinical management for over fifteen years, having been Director of Women’s Health at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, Director of Clinical Development and currently Director of R&D.
He is a member of the NHS R&D Forum and chairs the NHS Confederation HSR Board. He is a member of the Stroke Association R&D committee, various Department of Health stroke working groups and the Intercollegiate Stroke Working Group. He is an NIHR Inaugural Senior Investigator.
