Biography
Alan Maryon-Davis trained at St Thomas’s and, after an early career in clinical medicine and general practice, studied social medicine at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He then joined the Health Education Council (later Authority) becoming head of health sciences. He was for some years a member of the Cancer Research Campaign Research Committee and on the project steering teams for the Family Heart Study and the Allied Dunbar National Fitness Survey. In the early 1990s he directed HealthQuest SouthEast, a health and lifestyle survey of 45,000 adults in the South East Thames Region. More recently he has focused on reviewing evidence of the effectiveness of health improvement and preventive interventions.
Alan currently chairs the NICE Public Health Topic Consideration Panel and is a member of the Alcohol Education & Research Council. He is also vice-chair of the National Heart Forum and immediate-past President of the UK Faculty of Public Health.
He has been an active contributor to the undergraduate medical teaching programme at KCL and its predecessor UMDS since 1988. He currently runs a special study module in Medicine and the Media, and also teaches on the Year 2 Clinical Epidemiology programme.
