KCL and NICE

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between King’s College London and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). The aim is to build upon the research, teaching, service development and capacity building activities currently undertaken by both organisations with the emphasis on exploring new research programmes that will benefit local, national and international populations. The day to day running of the MoU is overseen by a steering committee and it has already had its first meeting. The lead people within King’s are Prof Charles Wolfe and Prof Peter Littlejohns from the Division of Health & Social Care Research (Department of Primary Care & Public Health Sciences), and Gillian Leng and Kalipso Chalkidou represent the Institute. The steering committee has agreed a joint research programme to develop innovative approaches to implementing evidence into practice in order to improve public health. The proposed projects cover a range of health and social care settings and will also address global health priorities.

Professor Naomi Fulop

Professor Naomi Fulop has been at King’s for 7 years now, initially in the School of Social Science and Public Policy and latterly in the Division of Health and Social Care, School of Medicine. She has recently been appointed to a Chair in Health Care Organisation and Management at UCL and starts there in April with her team from King’s. During her time with us she has established and directed the NIHR Patient Safety and Service Quality Centre, one of two such centres nationally, which has been using social science research to develop new ways of improving the quality and safety of care. The Centre has both generated important findings that have had relevance locally and nationally and provided opportunities for local healthcare professionals to engage in research in this area.

Collaborations with colleagues at King’s have centred around the organisation and improvement of care and these collaborations will continue in major projects such as the reconfiguration of stroke services in England and a translational study of organisational and cultural factors in quality and safety in five European countries. We are looking forward to building on these collaborations between KCL and UCL, and developing the contribution of the management and organisation to the improvement of health care.  I would like to thank Naomi for her leadership in this area and as a collaborator and wish her every success at UCL.

Professor Charles Wolfe, Head of Division
