Biography

Dr. Taylor was a Senior clinical fellow at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington before being appointed to Guy’s and Lewisham Hospitals in 1991 and to St Thomas’ Hospital in 1997. In collaboration with John Reidy, he established Guy’s and subsequently St Thomas’ as a pioneering aortic endovascular unit. Initially dealing with the abdominal aorta and subsequently in the thoracic aorta. In 2009 he became president of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland. In 2010 he was appointed Professor of Vascular Surgery at King’s College London.

Research interests

His main focus of research is in aortic procedures,  particularly endovascular interventions for thoracic and abdominal pathology. He has a special interest in aortic dissection and complex aortic aneurysms which involve the arch vessels and mesenteric and renal arteries of the aorta.

Group members

Tom Carrell Senior Lecturer works on complex endovascular aortic repair using branched and fenestrated devices. The project involves 2D/3D image registration techniques to produce real-time 3D roadmaps to accurately guide catheters into the origins of aortic branches with reduced contrast injection. The use of robotic steerable catheters to aid intervention is being investigated.

Rachel Clough is a PhD student investigating the role of 4D magnetic resonance imaging techniques for characterisation of complex flow, pressure and motion in the thoracic aorta with the aim of developing patient-specific treatments.

Teaching responsibility

Undergraduate teaching on the ward, in outpatients and in theatres. We attract high quality postgraduates with an interest in complex aortic intervention with two senior clinical fellows, Vascular Society and BSET endovascular fellows (sponsored by Cook Medical) and senior Specialist registrars, on the South East and South West London training schemes.

NHS liaison and relationships

Helped develop the national vascular database during my time with the Vascular Society and continued the process of establishing vascular surgery as a separate specialty to general surgery. Member of the vascular surgical section of Healthcare for London.
