PhD studentships

425x280pxphdstudentshipsresizedWe run a high quality Doctoral training programme and have a number of funded positions for high calibre chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, engineering or computing students to join us. Successful applicants will join a world leading inter-disciplinary group of over a hundred scientists and clinicians. Our inter-disciplinary nature, and location within one of the major teaching hospitals in the UK, provides a unique environment for our focus on rapid translation of cutting edge research into the clinic.

Over the past 20 years we have built up a critical mass of basic science and clinical research with an outward-looking approach that engenders such dialogues in a way that would not be possible in a less integrated setting. This foundation has recently been further developed through strong links with imaging equipment manufacturers and the pharmaceutical industry.  Together with SMEs and university start-ups, they provide an important and industrially relevant environment, which fosters translational research and so improves patient care.

Specific research areas which contribute to these themes include: image analysis and image-guided intervention; intelligent image acquisition; MRI, multi-scale computational modelling; high field NMR; clinical PET and development of molecular imaging agents. Exploitation of the synergy between these methodologies has lead to the development of novel tools for diagnosis, therapy assessment and treatment in the cardiovascular, neuroscience, cancer and osteoporosis applications.

Successful candidates will enter into either a 3 or 4 year PhD programme. Candidates taking the 4-year programme will, for their first year, be enrolled into our MRes in Imaging Sciences.
