Exhibition: Writing the Middle Ages

06 Jan 2009-28 Mar 2009, 09:30-17:00, Weston Room, Maughan Library & Information Services Centre, Strand Campus

School / area: ISS
Location: Strand Campus
Location map: Strand: detail

This exhibition, which has been curated by Joshua Davies of the Department of English, explores both the physical act of writing (scripts, tools and materials) and the content of medieval writings. It illuminates the transition from manuscript to print and examines later ‘rewritings’ and interpretations of the Middle Ages, from the early antiquarians through Victorian medievalism to poets and artists of today who find inspiration in this period.

Drawing on the holdings of the Foyle Special Collections Library, the Maughan Library and the College Archives, the exhibition also includes material lent by kind permission of the Museum of Writing, of Senate House Library and of His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Trustees of Lambeth Palace Library, as well as a specially commissioned work of art by artist Sarah Bridgland.
