Portuguese History Workshop: 'Formal and informal empire and Portuguese relations with the non-European world' is a one-day workshop that takes in a broad sweep of imperial history from the 16th to the 20th century. Looking at the imperial experience in the Portuguese-speaking worlds of Africa and the Indian subcontinent in particular, the workshop brings together 11 papers from scholars from Angola, Britain, Germany, Holland, Ireland and Italy, and looks at themes ranging from African-European relations in the precolonial era to the Portuguese Estado da India and the ideology and legacy of Portugal's 20th century African empire.
