Exhibition: Learning from Lister

26 Jan 2012-14 Apr 2012, 09:30-17:00, Weston Room, Maughan Library, Strand Campus

Department: Library Services
Location: Strand Campus
Location map: Strand: detail

2012 marks the centenary of the death of the celebrated surgeon, Joseph, Baron Lister, whose ‘discovery’ of antiseptic surgery has made him one of the few medical household names. In this exhibition we bring Lister’s career and milieu to life through artefacts, personal effects, documents and books. Items on display include Lister’s surgical instrument case, a carbolic spray dispenser devised by him and one of his surgical casebooks. Lister was appointed professor of clinical surgery at King's in 1877 and the exhibition draws on our rich holdings of Lister material, as well as showcasing items kindly lent to us by other institutions.

Please note that the exhibition is closed on Sundays.
