Fear Itself: The New Deal and the Origins of Our Time

Professor Ira Katznelson is the Ruggles Professor of Political and Historical Science at Columbia University. He is an Americanist who engages broadly with comparative politics as well as political theory. Professor Katznelson was President of the American Political Science Association for 2005-2006. Previously, he served as President of the Politics and History Section of APSA, President of the Social Science History Association, and Chair of the Russell Sage Foundation Board of Trustees. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He has taught at the University of Chicago and the New School for Social Research.

Some of the books he has written and edited include: When Affirmative Action Was White: An Untold History of Racial Inequality in Twentieth-Century America (2005); Religion and the Political Imagination (with Gareth Stedman Jones, 2011); Liberal Beginnings: Making a Republic for the Moderns (with Andreas Kalyvas, 2008);  Black Men, White Cities: Race, Politics, and Migration in the United States, 1900-1930, and Britain, 1948-1968 (1973); City Trenches: Urban Politics and the Patterning of Class in the United States (1981).
