Inaugural lecture: Magic Strings
16 Feb 2010, 17:30, Great Hall, Strand CampusSchool / area: Natural & Mathematical Sciences
Location: Strand Campus
Location map: Strand: detail
Speaker: Professor Nikolaos Mavromatos
Nikolaos Mavromatos will give his inagural lecture, entitled
Magic Strings. T
he lecture will discuss the possibility that string theory models may violate one of the most fundamental symmetry principles we have in Physics today, namely Lorentz symmetry at microscopic scales of the order of the Planck length (ie as small as 10^{-35} meters). MAGIC here is an acromym of a Telescope in the Canary islands, which was the first to observe delayed arrivals of more energetic photons, as compared to lower-energy ones, from a distant cosmic source.
