Psychological distress is experienced by 60% of patients with advanced disease and has an enormous impact on the quality of life of patients and their families. The management of psychological distress is clinically challenging as identifying the underlying cause of symptoms, such as sleep disturbance, fatigue and poor appetite, can be difficult. Differentiating depression from normal sadness, which often accompanies life-limiting illness, adds complexity. Research shows that psychological distress is associated with a desire for death, and this also highlights the need for an evidence-based and skilful clinical response.
New evidence-based clinical guidelines for the management of depression in palliative care are launched at this one-day conference. Expert clinicians and researchers will address the nature, identification and management of psychological distress in advanced disease. New advances in the field will be presented and opportunities for discussion will be facilitated.
