Lecture: Translating Wolfram's Parzival
5 December, 18.00, Room 1B27, First Basement, Room 27, StrandCampusDr Cyril Edwards (Oxford), Here stood the heron, there the fish - on translating Wolfram's Parzival
Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival is the greatest of the medieval Grail romances. Its first appearance in English was in a verse translation by Jessie Weston (1894). American verse and prose translations followed in the 1950s and 1960s. A. T. Hatto's Penguin Classics translation appeared in 1980. Cyril Edwards's new translation, appearing with Oxford World's Classics, tries to move closer to the original and capture something of the zest of Wolfram's style.
All are welcome - please pass on the invitation to any who may be interested, including students.
