CBE for Principal

The Principal of King’s College London, Professor Arthur Lucas, has been awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Jubilee Year Birthday Honours.

Professor Lucas, Principal of King’s since 1993 and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, was awarded his CBE, for services to higher education.

He joined Chelsea College (which merged with King’s in 1985) in 1980 as Professor of Science Curriculum Studies. He was appointed Assistant Principal with responsibility for the Chelsea Campus in 1988 and Head of the School of Education in 1989. In 1991 he became Vice-Principal with particular responsibility for academic planning. His research interests range from the history of science to the ways in which learning occurs in museums.

Other people associated with King’s who have been honoured include:

Professor Peter Marshall FBA FKC, Emeritus Professor in the Department of History and former President of the Royal Historical Society, was awarded a CBE for services to history. He joined King’s in 1959 and became Rhodes Professor of Imperial History in 1981.

Professor Jack Spence, Visiting Professor in the Department of War Studies, was awarded an OBE for services to the Ministry of Defence.

Judith Mayhew, Chairman, Policy and Resources Committee for the Corporation of London and former Sub-Dean in the King’s College London School of Law, was awarded a DBE for services to the City of London.

Sir Michael Howard Kt CBE FBA FKC, Emeritus Professor of Modern History, University of Oxford, and member of the King’s College London Department of History from 1947 to 1968, has been awarded a Companion of Honour for services to military studies. He founded the Department of War Studies at King's before leaving for All Souls Oxford. He is also a long serving Trustee of the King's College London Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives.

Max Hastings, former editor of the Evening Standard and The Daily Telegraph and also a Trustee of the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, was awarded a knighthood for services to journalism.

Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives
The Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives holds the private papers of nearly 600 senior British defence personnel who have held office since 1900. It has an active acquisitions policy and 30 to 40 collections are added each year. The Centre also houses a growing collection of related microforms, chiefly of American official papers, and the personal library of Captain Sir Basil Liddell Hart.


King's College London
